Dr. John Knight, the Hand and Wrist Institute’s current director and founder, has been treating hand and wrist disorders for over two decades. Dr. Knight is a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon with a Certificate of Added Qualifications for hand surgery. He earned his medical degree at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed a Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship through the Joesph H. Boyes program. Among one of the first doctors in the southern United States to perform a successful transplant of a toe to the hand for use as a thumb, Dr. John Knight is a well-known and renowned leader in the field of hand and upper extremity medical care.

Hand disorders vary by cause and individual case, but Dr. Knight treats many common hand and upper extremity problems, including Carpal Tunnel, Trigger Finger, Ganglion Cyst and Mommy Thumb.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a disorder that causes weakness, numbness and pain in the ring, middle, thumb and index fingers because of pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. Some sufferers experience pain through the forearm and to the shoulder. Carpal Tunnel is caused by repetitive movement, but any condition that puts pressure on the median nerve, such as obesity, may also cause Carpal Tunnel. Braces may help a person with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but open or endoscopic surgery may be necessary of the person doesn’t respond to nonsurgical treatment.

Trigger Finger is associated with forceful, repetitive movements of the finger in people over 40, but an exact cause has not been identified yet. Trigger Finger is the unlocking of the joint when a person straightens a bent finger and causes limited movement and pain. Nonsurgical treatments, such as pain medication and sheaths, may successfully treat Trigger Finger. If nonsurgical treatment fails, a person with Trigger Finger may need a simple surgery to free the tendon.

A Ganglion Cyst is a tumor made of soft tissue that may form around the tendons or the hand and wrist joints. While the exact cause of the cyst is unknown, some evidence links the condition to repetitive movements and wrist sprains. Ganglion Cysts may be painful or painless. Nonsurgical treatments, such as rest and splits, are tried before more invasive procedures. Surgical treatment involves the removal of the cyst and has a low occurrence rate.

De Quervain’s Stenosing Tenosynovitis, also known as Mommy’s Thumb, is the inflammation of the tendons controlling the thumb. The condition earned the nickname “Mommy’s Thumb” because of a rise in occurrences among women due to heavier babies and more complicated cribs. The condition causes pain and tenderness in the affected wrist and thumb. Nonsurgical treatments, such as pain medication and rest, are employed before surgical treatment. Surgical treatment for Mommy’s Thumb involves creating a minor incision to relieve pressure on the tendons. Watch Dr. Knight discuss Mommy Thumb on The Doctor’s TV show.

The Hand and Wrist Institute is the premier treatment center dedicated to minimally invasive treatments, short recovery times and less scarring. While other hospitals and doctor office’s are capable of treating hand disorders, Dr. Knight’s experience and the institute’s focus on the least invasive treatment possible provide a high standard of care for any person suffering from a hand disorder.
